A child who is hungry or worries about where their next meal will come from cannot focus on learning. To address the problem of hunger in the community, we have partnered with Fred Meyer, Mountain View Community Center, Pilgrim Lutheran Church, Cornerstone Community Church, All Saints Catholic Church, and High Pointe Community Church to provide backpacks full of food for students at Dessie Evans, Karshner, Stewart, Firgrove, Woodland, Pope, and Sunrise Elementary.
Every Friday we distribute these backpacks of food to support the health and well-being of our highest need students over the weekend and holidays when school meal programs are not available.
One in four children in Pierce County is hungry. Last year we met this critical need by serving 290 students with our supplemental food programs and are set to increase this number in the next school year.
