“Last year K., a former student of mine, delivered a confident presentation on the State of Hawaii to a room full of students and adults. After two years in the Communities In Schools Good Samaritan Readers Program, it was an impressive performance. K transformed herself from a struggling reader, arriving tired, unfocused, and withdrawn at the beginning of the first grade, into an eager learner. Her determination and hard work to catch up with her classmates led her reading scores to soar. Due to a move, K is not participating in the program this year, but thanks to the Good Samaritan Readers Program, she is excelling as a third grader at her new school.”
